Game overview:

Interstellar Adventures is an interactive, story-driven, “escape-room” style game with puzzles, mini-games and moral choices. It’s set-up in the form of 3 episodes, with retro TV and comic book vibes.

As you may have already deduced (you clever sausage), it’s a sci-fi adventure and you find yourself on a spaceship full of quirky crew, who you’ll meet as the story progresses. But things quickly go awry, leaving you to puzzle your way through the adventure and unravel the wider mystery.

We played a prototype version of Episode 1: Into the Unknown!

And that’s as much as I can say without delving into spoiler territory! So, let’s get into our thoughts!

Our first impressions:

  • Just like watching a favourite TV programme, our time playing Interstellar Adventures flew by. Before we knew it the episode ended with a cliffhanger and left us wanting more! We thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
  • The artwork is so cool! Using comic-book style panels to tell the story was so innovative, and we were invested in the story and characters from the start.
  • There’s a great mix of puzzles (even in the first episode alone!), from dexterity to deduction. There were puzzles that played to our different strengths, so we both had opportunities to take the lead. And there was one puzzle in particular that took us by surprise!

Using comic-book style panels to tell the story was so innovative, and we were invested in the story and characters from the start.

  • We also love that there are a bonus puzzles that aren’t essential, but if you spot them and solve them you get special trophies!
  • As you meet new characters, you get a character card that tells you a little bit about them! Such a clever way to build in some backstory and get us invested in the characters.
  • Difficulty is really subjective to judge. We do a lot of these types of games and while we didn’t struggle to solve any of the puzzles, we don’t think they were too easy either. This is definitely more of a ‘fun puzzles with a great theme implementation’ kind of game, than a ‘super tough, push your brain to the limits’ type game.
  • If you get stuck there’s a hint deck. We didn’t use any so I had a peek and the hints were also given in the same comic book style – a great way to keep the immersion going rather than the usual plain text format.
  • We didn’t get any penalties (bragging much?) so I had a sneaky peek at those too. Some of them involved fun little forfeits for the players to do – nothing outrageous, but in keeping with narrative. What a brilliant idea.
  • There are puzzles (in later episodes) that need multiple players to work, which is why it’s 2 players minimum (this is NOT a criticism, but mentioned in case solo players are curious why).

This is an amazing debut from designers Harriet and Cole, and a great launchpad for a whole series of Adventures (Interstellar and beyond!).
